There is a reason why the classic game Monopoly has been a mainstay in most board game collections since it was introduced in 1904! It is lighthearted, just easy enough to play, fun and comfortable! This version, House Divided, works basically the same way as the classic Monopoly, but it is politically themed. Even the tokens are political: a donkey, a peace symbol, a teacup, among others. Instead of buying properties, Boardwalk, St. James Ave, etc., like in the original game, in this version you actually buy states. And each state provides the owner with so many votes – which is mainly how you win the game, the winning player has the most votes. The game also allows players to “own” the White House, by rolling doubles, which adds to the fun – stealing back the White House from your opponent. The game has cards that can either punish a player – ‘Your Fundraiser was a Bust, pay $250 ‘- or reward a player – ‘Your Fundraiser was successful, collect $250’. Players are also allowed to place “campaign headquarters” on their states, which increases the rent you can collect should another player land on it.
There are other little quirks and twists to the game, but, overall, Monopoly House Divided is easy to set up, easy to get the gist of, and can take anywhere from 45 minutes to a couple of hours to play, you can choose your pace and how involved you want it to be. It also works really well for two players – even though one player has to act as the banker, it doesn’t cause too much of a blip in the gameplay.
